I think the most telling character moment for Taako, as far as I’m concerned, is when Merle puts the Zone of Truth on him. Two episodes earlier, our wizard boy had loudly declared that he didn’t trust anyone or anything. That even his friends were not on his trusted people list. 

And then we find him just standing there and letting Merle cast Zone of Truth on him, not even trying to resist it (therefore trusting Merle not to take advantage and ask him stupid questions, and more than that trusting Merle’s magic to spell him properly, even after all the times Taako took the piss out of his spelling skills). And then under the influence declares that he trusts Angus MacDonald, Boy Detective completely and without reservation. 

It really says a lot about his character and how much of what Taako says and does is part of how he protects himself.
